For tension headaches

The headache that starts at the base of your skull.

It builds through the afternoon and wraps around your head like a band. Press where your skull meets your neck and you'll find the sore spot it came from. That's where Hizoo goes.

  • Works the knots behind the 3 p.m. headache
  • Warmth for tense neck muscles, which Mayo Clinic suggests for tension headaches
  • Ten minutes lying down, then it switches itself off

Sound like yours?

If this is your headache, start at your neck.

  • It builds slowly through the afternoon instead of hitting all at once
  • It feels like a tight band, or a hat that's too small
  • There's a sore spot where your skull meets your neck
  • Long days at a screen or behind the wheel make it worse

Doctors call these tension-type headaches. The World Health Organization describes them as pressure or tightness, "often like a band around the head, sometimes spreading into or from the neck," and says they may be stress-related or tied to problems in the neck.

Why your neck

The pain shows up in your head. The knot is lower down.

When researchers pressed on knots in the muscle between the neck and shoulder, the pain often traveled up into the head, and nearly half of people with chronic tension headaches said it felt exactly like their usual headache.

That's why rubbing your temples helps for about a minute. The muscles that start it sit at the base of your skull and across the tops of your shoulders, and they need warmth and slow pressure to let go.

"Tense muscles can trigger tension-type headaches. Apply heat to relieve tense neck and shoulder muscles."
Mayo Clinic, on tension-type headaches

It feels like warm hands on your neck, because it's shaped like them.

Most neck massagers are a flat pillow with bumps that roll against the back of your head. Hizoo has two tall prongs that cradle the back and sides of your neck, so the kneading lands where a massage therapist would put their thumbs.

Heat

Warms up to 42°C (107°F), like a hot towel, so tight muscle softens before the kneading gets to it.

Knead

Four nodes press in, circle and switch direction. Three strengths, from gentle to deep.

Stretch

As you lie back, the shape lifts your neck into a gentle stretch while it works.

Questions

About headaches and Hizoo.

Where should the nodes sit for a headache?

At the top of your neck, just under the base of your skull, with the two prongs on either side of your spine. Not on the skull itself. If you feel the nodes on the back of your head, slide up an inch.

Should I use it during a headache, or before one starts?

Either. Some people lie back on it when they feel the tightness creeping up in the afternoon. Others use it every evening so the tension doesn't carry into the next day.

What about migraines?

Some of our reviewers with migraines use it on the neck and shoulder tension that comes with them. One wrote: "Using the massager on my neck and shoulders has helped relieve the tension and pain I feel." Dr. Randi B., a chiropractor, says she'd tell patients with "cervicogenic headaches or migraines" to have one at home between visits.

What if it feels like too much on a bad day?

Use the lowest strength with the heat on. A tender neck usually wants gentle and warm, not deep.

What if it isn't for me?
