How it works

Why is your face still puffy when you've done everything right?

The fluid in your face drains down through your neck and out just above your collarbone. When the muscles in your neck are tight, it drains more slowly. It sits in your face overnight, and that's the puffiness you see when you wake up.

Hizoo loosens those muscles while you lie back for 10 minutes. The fluid drains, and you wake up looking like yourself again.

The problem

Does any of this sound like you?

If it does, a lot of what you see in the mirror is fluid. It collects in your face while you sleep, and it can only leave one way.

Why it happens
  • You wake up puffy, but look normal by lunchtime.
  • You've lost weight, but your face hasn't changed at all.
  • You're lean everywhere else, but your face still looks bloated in photos.
  • You've cut back on salt and wine, and you still wake up puffy.
  • You tilt the camera up before every video call.
  • People ask if you're tired, even after a good night's sleep.
Why it happens

Why is your face puffiest when you wake up?

Your body is always moving a little fluid through your face. It seeps out of tiny blood vessels, and then it drains away again as lymph.1

Lymph has no heart pushing it. It moves when your muscles move, when you breathe, and with gentle pressure.1

When you sleep, you lie flat and barely move for hours. Fluid drifts up toward your head, and less of it gets pushed along.2 So it sits in your face overnight. That's why the puffiness is worst in the morning, and why it goes down once you're up and moving.

Astronauts get an extreme version of this. In space nothing pulls fluid down toward their feet, and NASA calls the result "puffy face".3

What else makes it worse?

A salty dinner or a few drinks

Both make your body hold on to water, and it often shows in your face first the next morning.4

A short night

In a sleep study, people looking at photos rated faces as having more swollen eyes after a short night.5

Sitting still all day

Lymph moves when your muscles move. Long hours at a desk or on the sofa give it very little help.1

Your period

In a study of 62 women, fluid retention felt worst on the first day of their period.6

Getting older

Research suggests lymph moves more slowly as we get older.7 A daily habit helps it along.

A tight neck

The fluid from your face drains through your neck. When the muscles there are tight, it drains more slowly.

Why your neck matters
Where it goes

The fluid in your face drains down through your neck.

Your face doesn't have a drain of its own. Fluid from your cheeks, under your eyes and along your jaw first moves into small lymph nodes in front of your ears and under your jaw. Then it runs down a chain of nodes on the side of your neck. It leaves just above your collarbone, where it goes back into your blood.8

Gray's Anatomy, the textbook doctors learn from, says all the lymph vessels of the head and neck drain to that chain on the side of your neck.8 When researchers mapped those vessels, they found them packed together on the side of the neck and spread thin across the face.10 So your neck works like the narrow end of a funnel.

300 Lymph nodes sit in your head and neck. That's about a third of all the lymph nodes in your body.9
Stop 1
Your face

Fluid collects under your eyes and along your jaw, most of all overnight.

Stop 2
In front of your ears and under your jaw

Small lymph nodes here collect the fluid first.

Stop 3 · where it slows down
Down the side of your neck

A chain of nodes runs under the long muscle that turns your head. A tight neck slows the fluid here.

Stop 4 · the way out
Just above your collarbone

The fluid goes back into your blood here. Lymphatic therapists call this spot the terminus, and it's where they start.

Why your neck matters

When your neck is tight, the fluid in your face drains more slowly.

The chain that drains your face runs right under the long muscle on each side of your neck, the one that turns your head.8 Lymph vessels are soft, and they rely on movement to keep fluid flowing.1

Most of us spend hours looking down at a phone or a laptop, and a lot of us carry stress in our neck and shoulders. Those muscles stay tight, so the fluid in your face drains out more slowly. More of it is still there when you wake up.

In one published case, a woman had lived with swelling in her face for four years. Her doctors worked on her neck first, along that muscle, and a month later the swelling had gone down a lot.11

"When you spend all day looking down at phones or screens, the SCM shortens and tightens."

Dr. Brandon Bridgeman, sports chiropractor

The SCM is that long muscle on each side of your neck.

What the professionals do

Before a lymphatic therapist touches your face, they start at your neck.

Every bit of fluid in your face leaves through the same spot above your collarbone. So therapists clear that spot and the sides of your neck first. Then they move the fluid in your face down toward it. If you push fluid toward a way out that's still blocked, it just backs up.

Cancer hospitals teach their patients this order,12 and so does the NHS.13 Esthetician training teaches it too.16

Doctors have measured it

In a 2025 study, 46 people had their wisdom teeth taken out. The ones who had lymphatic drainage that started at the collarbone had less swelling in their face, measured with 3D scans.14 An earlier study found that drainage on the neck alone brought swelling in the face down.15

What Hizoo does

Hizoo loosens the muscles in your neck so the fluid in your face can drain.

Hizoo is a heated neck massager you lie back on. Two tall, rounded prongs cradle the back and sides of your neck, and four kneading nodes work the muscles there while the warmth helps them relax. After 10 minutes it turns itself off. Use it before bed, and you wake up less puffy.

It works the back and sides of your neck, the same place lymphatic therapists start.
Warmth up to 42°C (107°F) helps tight neck muscles relax.
The Gentle setting is the one for puffiness. In a 2025 lab study, light strokes over the neck moved more fluid through it, and heavy pressure squeezed the vessels narrow.17
You lie back for 10 minutes and it turns itself off, so it's fine to fall asleep on it.
Afterwards, 30 seconds of light strokes down the sides of your neck helps the fluid on its way. See the hand finish.

Try it for 30 days. If you're not happy with it, send it back for a refund. Free shipping in the US.

Noticing my face slimming down

So far so good. The device itself is well-built and feels and works like an expensive product. It gets deep into your neck muscles and may not be for everyone. I bought this to help with face puffiness, and after about eight or so uses, I can say I am noticing my face slimming down. ...

Questions

What people ask about how it works

Can't find yours? See the full FAQ, or email support@hizoo.co. A real person on our team will answer.

How can a neck massager change how my face looks?

Your face drains through your neck. When the muscles in your neck loosen up, the fluid in your face can drain out the way it's meant to. You see the change in your face, even though Hizoo works on your neck.

How soon will I see a difference?

You'll feel your neck loosen the first night. Of the reviewers who said when they noticed a difference in their face, most said within about a week. You have 30 days to try it, which is plenty of time to see it in your own morning photos.

Isn't lymphatic drainage supposed to be really light?

Yes, and that's why you use the Gentle setting for puffiness. Gentle pressure moves lymph better than hard pressure. The light part is your 30-second hand finish: a few soft strokes down the sides of your neck after the 10 minutes.

Does it press on the front of my neck?

No. Hizoo works the muscles on the back and sides of your neck, and nothing presses on the front. It's made to be used every day, and it turns itself off after 10 minutes.

I've tried gua sha and rollers. Why would this be any different?

Rollers and gua sha work on your face. The fluid in your face still has to drain out through your neck, and your neck is where Hizoo works. If you like your roller, keep it and use it after Hizoo. And if Hizoo isn't for you, you have 30 days to send it back.

Does it work for men too?

Yes. Everyone's face drains through the neck in the same way. Men who write to us about their face often mention their jawline, and a lot of men use Hizoo after the gym or after a long day at work. See how it works for men.

What changes

After a few weeks, the face in the mirror looks like yours again.

It starts with 10 minutes on your neck before bed. Within about a week your mornings look different, and after a few weeks the change shows up in the moments you used to dread.

Your eyes look open in the morning.

You look in the bathroom mirror first thing, and the face looking back is rested and familiar.

You stop tilting the camera.

On video calls you turn the camera on and get on with the meeting.

You stay in the group photo.

You stop offering to be the one who takes the picture.

Your jawline shows again.

You can see it from the side again, in photos and in the mirror.

Someone asks if you've lost weight.

It might be your partner over breakfast, or a friend you haven't seen in a while.

You look rested at work.

You look lean in photos, and your face finally matches the work you put in at the gym.

I looked like me again

For about 5 years, I've had constant, pronounced under eye puffiness. It makes me look much older than I am and has made me very self conscious.
