If you have TMJ pain, stop massaging your jaw

5 Reasons People With TMJ Unclench Their Jaw With A Neck Pillow (Your Jaw Can’t Let Go Until Your Neck Does)

Where you feel itWhere it starts
Your jaw pain isn’t coming from your face. It’s coming from your neck.

Your jaw and your neck work as a team. When your neck stays locked up, your jaw keeps clenching with it. Night guards, jaw tools, pills and Botox all work at the jaw. Hizoo goes under your neck.

“Just stop clenching,” they say. As if you know you’re doing it.

You wake up with your teeth pressed together. Your jaw is sore before you’ve said a word. It clicks when you chew. By 3 p.m. the ache has moved into your ear, your temple, the side of your neck.

So you tried the fixes. The night guard. Jaw exercises. Mewing. Mouth taping. Gua sha. Magnesium.

Some of it helped for a bit. Then the tension came back.

One owner got the advice a lot of people get:

I’ve had jaw pain for several months. Doctors just told me to take NASID and don’t stress so much. I’ve used this every night before going to bed and it has helped with my pain!

There’s a reason nothing sticks. Almost everything you’ve tried works on your jaw. The trouble is one floor down.

Here are 5 reasons people with TMJ now leave their jaw alone and lie back on a heated neck pillow instead.

1

Your jaw doesn’t work alone

Muscle ties your jaw to your neck. When one fires, so does the other.

Try this now. It takes 10 seconds.Put your fingertips on the back of your neck, right under your skull. Now clench your teeth for 3 seconds.

Feel that? Your neck just tightened. All you did was clench your jaw.
Close-up of a woman resting on Hizoo with her eyes closed: her jaw above, her neck on the node below
Your jaw, then your neck. Right next to each other, working together all day.

Researchers have measured this. At UCLA, they wired up the jaw and neck muscles of 12 people and told them to clench. The big muscle on the side of the neck fired in all 12.

In Germany, they tested 10 people lying down. The neck fired with the jaw. Then most of the neck muscles stayed switched on, at a low level, after the clench was over.

It runs the other way, too. In a study from Japan, people let their heads drift forward, the way yours does at a desk. The jaw joint slid back and the chewing muscle worked a little harder, with the mouth at rest.

So when your neck stays locked up, your jaw keeps clenching with it.

2

Knots in your neck can feel like jaw pain

Here’s the part nobody tells you.

Your jaw and the top of your neck send pain on different nerves. Both plug into the same relay, right where your brain meets your spine. Doctors call it the trigeminocervical nucleus.

And your brain can’t always tell which line is ringing.

In Spain, researchers pressed on knots, or trigger points, in the neck and shoulders of 25 women with TMJ pain. It set off the same pain they came in with. The knots at the very top of the neck, right under the skull, spread pain the widest of all.

Try this, too.Slide two fingers behind your ear and down into the side of your neck. Press gently.

Tender? Feel it in your jaw or your ear? You just found the link.

Right here, just under your ear. Where your neck meets your jaw.

That’s why the two travel together. In a University of Alberta study of 154 people, the worse the neck problems, the worse the jaw problems. The link scored 0.82, where 1.0 is a perfect match.

It has been life changing for my jaw discomfort! I guess my neck was the problem so now I do not have the tension I use to carry around all the time!

Your jaw is where you feel it. Your neck is where it starts.

3

Night guards, jaw tools, pills and Botox all stop at the jaw

Look at where each one works.

  • Night guard, mouth guardIn your mouth
  • Jaw tools, gua shaOn your jaw
  • Jaw exercises, mewing, mouth tapeYour jaw again
  • Pain pillsA few hours, then it’s back
  • BotoxIn your jaw muscles
  • HizooUnder your neck, 10 minutes a night

Not one of the others works on your neck. And when researchers checked the big ones, here’s what they found.

Night guards. A 2020 review went through 52 trials of splints, the family night guards belong to. It couldn’t show they ease TMJ pain. In another small study, people clenched with a dental appliance between their teeth. The big muscle on the side of the neck didn’t calm down.

Botox. In a 2024 trial of 75 people, Botox shots into the chewing muscles did no better for pain than salt water.

You’ve been working on the place it hurts. Not the place it starts.

I have TMJ, and having this device to keep my neck and shoulder relaxed also helps the jaw. I am noticing less headaches and more mobility in my shoulder joints.

Work the neck and the jaw lets go

Researchers have tested it. They left the jaw alone and worked on the neck.

  • 122 young adultsAll had tender spots in their jaw muscles. Some got one session of hands-on work at the base of the skull. Two minutes later, those jaw muscles were less tender and their mouths opened wider than in the group that got nothing. A small change, and nobody touched the jaw.
  • 61 women with TMJFive weeks of hands-on work and exercises for the upper neck. Their face and jaw pain dropped far more than in the group that got nothing.
  • 19 people with TMJTen sessions aimed at the neck. Less pain, more room to open their mouth, and it held 12 weeks later.
  • 60 people with TMJEveryone got the same self-care tips. One group also got posture training for the head and neck. After 4 weeks, TMJ symptoms fell 42% in that group. In the other, 8%.

Trained hands work the neck. But you can’t book them every day.

Those were trained hands and exercises, not a Hizoo. But they all point at the same place: the neck.

And here’s the catch with trained hands. You see them once a week if you’re lucky. Your neck tightens up every single day, from work, from stress, from a clench you don’t even notice.

This is now my go to between going to my massage therapist. It helps relieve tension in the traps that other head massages can’t touch. If you suffer from TMJ, tension headaches or if you grind your teeth at night and get that tightness behind your ears buy this. You won’t be disappointed!!

Your neck locks up every day. So it needs work every day.

5

It goes under your neck. You just lie back.

A woman lying back in bed with her neck resting on Hizoo, eyes closed
Ten minutes, lying back. Nothing in your mouth. Nothing on your jaw.

Hizoo is a heated massager you lie back on. Four nodes knead the back and sides of your neck, clockwise then counterclockwise, like a therapist’s thumbs. Warm heat, up to 42°C (107°F), helps tight muscles let go. After 10 minutes, it shuts itself off.

Why lying back matters: your own head does the pressing. Your hands rest. Your shoulders drop. You just breathe.

Right at the base, near the ears. That’s where your neck and jaw meet, and that’s where it works.
Your first week
  1. 1Lie back on a bed, couch or floor.
  2. 2Set your neck on the nodes, just under your skull. If they rub behind your ears, scoot down.
  3. 3Start on the lowest strength. It feels strong at first on a tight neck. Strong is normal. Sharp is not: go down a level.
  4. 4Stay the 10 minutes. It shuts itself off, so dozing off is fine.
  5. 5Do it every night. Your neck tightens every day.

Questions

Does it go on my jaw?
No. It goes under your neck. That’s the whole idea. The four nodes work the back and sides of your neck. Nothing goes on your jaw or in your mouth.
Why not just massage my jaw?
It can feel good for a minute. But it never reaches your neck, so your jaw keeps clenching with it. Start where it starts.
Do I stop wearing my night guard?
No need. Your night guard goes in your mouth. Hizoo goes under your neck. One doesn’t get in the way of the other.
I grind my teeth at night. Is this for me?
“For me it’s helped with my Jaw issues and I’ve already noticed I don’t grind my jaw/teeth in my sleep as often.” Isaac J. Many owners use it in bed, right before they go to sleep.
How soon will I feel it?
Some owners feel it the first time: “…I already felt relief after the first use.” Alexandra B. Others take a couple of weeks. Use it every night and give it the full 30 days.
Will it feel strong?
At first, yes. “…i was definitely a little sore after the first time I used it! But it wasn’t a bad sore.” Sophia J. Start on the lowest of the three strengths and build up.
Can I fall asleep on it?
Yes. It shuts itself off after 10 minutes.
What if it doesn’t help me?
You have 30 days from delivery to try it. Email support@hizoo.co and we’ll send a return label. Send it back with everything it came with. Your refund is what you paid, minus $15 return shipping.
What comes in the box?
Hizoo, a travel pouch, a USB-C charging cable and a quick-start guide. It’s cordless, with about 40 minutes per charge, and it has a 2-year warranty.
